Dianne and Branford Celebrate John Coltrane
Vocalist supreme Dianne Reeves and lauded saxophonist Branford Marsalis just played at the 50th edition of the North Sea Jazz Festival. They previewed their collaboration on “Dedicated To You”, an album celebrating the release of this classic ballads album of John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman. Together they offer new renditions of the six standards that appeared on the 1963 Impulse album “John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman”, as well as additional instrumental performances of compositions from Coltrane’s canon.
Dianne recorded with Branford’s regular band: Joey Calderazzo on piano, Eric Revis on bass, and Justin Faulkner on drums. “This was more of an integrated band thing, where the arrangements happened in the studio”, says Branford about the recording. And Dianne adds: “Listening to all the great singers coming up, I learned that they stood in the band, not in front of the band. They saw themselves as co-creators of the sound. The members of Branford’s quartet and I all speak the same language, and we all came up with ideas.”
The first single off the album, “They Say It’s Wonderful”, just came out yesterday and once again demonstrates why Dianne is the top jazz vocalist of today. The album will be available on black double vinyl and exclusive petrol colored double vinyl with a signed art card. Check them out on tour this fall:
