lovetempo – “But I Do” (Remixes)

lovetempo is the brainchild of Brooklyn-based singer and guitarist Mattie Safer (who has worked with Poolside and The Rapture in the past). His first EP came out a couple of years ago. Band members also include Mel Chambers (vocals, keys), Andre Chez Lewis (keys), Mayteana Morales (dr), and Henry Raker (sax). In late 2023, he also released a cool and shuffling version of Anita Baker’s “Same Ole Love”, where he was joined by Prince Terrence. And last summer, lovetempo released the gorgeous “But I Do” on Razor-N-Tape. Reminding me very much of the best work from Larry Heard, the track oozes brilliant vocals and a smoothly gliding soulful house groove.

The piece was co-written and co-produced by Dougie Stu, who also has his own brilliant album out on Ropeadope called “Familiar Future” (2020). And now it’s remix time. Out since about four months, we get four new mixes here, first an extended 12″ Mix of the original which now clocks in at six minutes. The percussion works exceptionally well. Electronic producer with a jazz background, Crackazat, has come up with a hip and throbbing house remix including some exciting keyboard work. Brazilian duo From House To Disco, out of Sao Paulo, adds some harder bass and drum work to the mix, helping to create some peak-hour nuances here. And London-based DJ and producer Daisybelle, originally from Puerto Rico, adds even more excitement to her soulful, jazzy remix with additional synth pads, punchy and wobbling bass lines, and some more sprinkling keys, making “this an irresistible “But I Do” both timeless and futuristic.
