Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic Starts Into Sixth Season

Magnus Lindgren "Stockholm Underground"On Wednesday, Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic, the extremely popular concert series at Berlin’s prestigious venue, already starts into its sixth season. Saxophonist, flutist, and clarinetist Magnus Lindgren will play music in memory of Herbie Mann and has dubbed his concert “Stockholm Undergound”, similar to Mister Mann’s groundbreaking “Memphis Underground” LP from 1969.

Among his bandmates for this special project are Ida Sand on vocals and piano, Lars Danielsson on bass, and special guest Till Brönner on trumpet. Also on the menu for this year: another special concert called “Sisters In Jazz” under the direction of ultra-cool drummer, composer and producer Terri Lyne Carrington. The all-female group consists of Tineke Postma (sax), Céline Bonacina (bari sax), Shannon Barnett (trombone and vocals), Hildegunn Oiseth (trumpet), Anke Helfrich (piano), and Lisa-Rebecca Wulff (bass).

For 2018, two concerts are set: a Benny Goodman tribute with Rolf Kühn on clarinet, Émile Parisien (sax), Christopher Dell (vibes), Iiro Rantala (piano), Lars Danielsson (bass) and Jeff Hamilton (drums) with the NDR Bigband directed by Jörg Achim Keller on March 16th and pianist Michael Wollny‘s 40th birthday celebrations with special guests on May 28th.
