Pat Metheny in Berlin
On the heels of his most recent solo release “MoonDial”, guitarist Pat Metheny made a stop last night at the Berlin Philharmonie. Over the course of two full hours, he divided his show into different parts, focusing on several of his most recent projects and one going back a bit further. Pat played various nylon string guitars and a baritone guitar as well. After a sort of best-of intro, he started to talk about his upbringing, his love for the guitar and his early ways as a musician. Unusually for him, since he never really talked that much during his performances over the years. But it was a nice feature throughout the programme.
So there was music from his still absolutely beautiful album “Beyond The Missouri Sky”, which he recorded with Charlie Haden in 1997. The music from that album still resonates up to this day so it was especially satisfying to hear pieces like “The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress” or “Two For The Road” again and in a solo format. With a couple of strings tuned an octave higher, sometimes the guitar sounded like three instruments: bass, sitar, and harp. At other times, like violin, viola and cello. Fascinating stuff. From his “What’s It All About”, his album of cover songs, there were especially rewarding versions of “Alfie” and “Rainy Days And Mondays”. And then of course he played some tunes from his most recent album, in between also playing his custom-made 42-string, showing that there can also be a lot of noise. Standing ovations completed a well-rounded and more than thrilling evening.
