Weekly Playlist from Gina
As you probably know, Gina releases a weekly 60-minute playlist of new music since early 2024. And yes, it is on Spotify. For the many bad things you can say about this streaming platform, I have discovered a lot of new artists in the last couple of years, only to find me buying their vinyl if they’re fancy enough. So this week, we start off with a wonderful new track from Brooklyn-based Relyae. “Chances” sums up everything we love about him: the chill, the drive, the freshness and dreamy vocals. “Live-Action” is the upcoming album by drummer, producer, and composer Nate Smith. The album features Lalah Hathaway, Lionel Loueke, Michael League, and on the new single “Juke Joint”, Jermaine Holmes, DJ Harrison, and Charlie Hunter. Album will be out on August 29th and Nate tours throughout Europe in November, with a stop in Berlin on November 12th.
We also feature a second track from trumpeter Till Brönner‘s next album “Italia” (out on September 5th). After his brilliant take on “Viva La Felicità”, he releases “Via Con Me”, a Paolo Conte classic which has Mario Biondi on vocals. MF Robots have come up with the perfect summer tune this year. Check out their “Hello Sunshine” from their upcoming third album. We also dig the new song by Debórah Bond. “Amber Dust” is her dedication to the late great Roy Ayers. And it sounds amazing. Trumpeter Nicholas Payton will release his next LP “Triune” on Smoke Sessions on October 10th. Second single “#bamisforthechildren” has Ivan Neville, Esperanza Spalding, Karriem Riggins, Erica Falls, and Otis McDonald on a funky jam. There is also a new, 4-track EP out now from Ambar Navran (Moonchild) and Phil Beaudreau (Lalah Hathaway). “So Good” is just that!
Pino Palladino and Blake Mills drop a second single off their upcoming “That Wasn’t A Dream” LP, to be released on August 22nd. Torsten Goods has another single out from his pretty soulful new album “Soul Deep” (September 12th). Christian McBride features various singers on his new album “Without Further Ado, Vol.1” (Sting, Jeffrey Osborne, Dianne Reeves). On “Old Folks”, it’s Samara Joy. A new retro-soul beauty is out from Johnny Burgos who will release his second album with Jeremy Page later this year. There is also a new piece from Kurt Elling and Christian Sands. Together, they play around on the classic “Glow Worm”. Our house feature this week is from Vested Soul (that’s Francisco Cueto of All Good Funk Alliance). Check out “Just One” from his new 4-piece EP. And just out on BBE Music: Australian future soul songstress Natalie Slade with her new LP “Molasses”, with production work by Sampology and lush strings. Please check out the playlist now!
