DetroitCentriX – Rollerskate

Kathy Kosins and Paul Randolph, who together have formed DetroitCentriX, have come up with a new single. After “What We Want” and “Ain’t No Wrong”, the Detroit-based artists are now back with “Rollerskate”. The trend by the way goes back to around 1979, when the roller disco trend started and movies like “Roller Boogie” were the top of the game and the Empire Rollerdome in Brooklyn the hottest location.

And so this particular track actually reminds me of early 80s The Brothers Johnson. The vocal harmonies of both Kathy and Paul gel perfectly, giving this tune a certain airiness. The lighthearted mood is underscored by warm keys which start out the track before Paul’s thick and funky basslines chime in. It’s a fancy, somewhat low-key party track with just enough sweet soul in it and a reminder of those glorious days. They perfectly managed to combine the insouciant boogie times of the early 80s with the sophisticated and cool twist of today’s soul brew. Check it out now!
