Michael Mayo – Fly (Deluxe Edition) and Tour

New York-based singer Michael Mayo, who last year released his critically-acclaimed album “Fly”, recently added a handful of tracks to the album, all of them with the Swedish Norrbotten Big Band with Calle Rasmusson as arranger and conductor. The new songs once again show the immense versatility of Michael as a singer and songwriter on soulful tracks like “You And You” or jazzed-up, fiery tunes like “About Your Love”. I think the combination of big band, Michael’s distinctive songwriting style and his powerful, somewhat wholesome vocals work pretty well on the midtempo “Bag Of Bones” which also comes along with great drum work and a svelte piano solo which then makes way for a sleek sax solo. “Bones” is a more intricate, almost haunting piece with Michael briefly switching to falsetto. And he also re-works his own “Four” from his original album; a swinging, shuffling, groove-laden outro with a tight orchestra. Michael is on tour in Europe in October and November. We’re looking forward to his show in Berlin.
