Cassandra Wilson: New Deal and New Album

Cassandra Wilson "Coming Forth By Day"She just started her European tour which will also bring her to various German cities (see also my Events Calendar). Now, Legacy Recordings just announced that they’ve signed a new deal with Cassandra Wilson. “Coming Forthy By Day” is going to be a musical homage to Billie Holiday whose 100th birthday would be on April 7th, 2015.  The album was produced by Nick Launay who is primarily known as Nick Cave’s producer and the album will be a moody and soulful showcase of Wilson’s interpretations, according to the press release.

I’m sure she’ll put new spins on the well-worn Holiday classics without sounding too clichéd or safe. That’s what Cassandra stands for anyway. The album was recorded in Los Angeles with, among others, guitarists T Bone Burnett and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, string arranger Van Dyke Parks and Martyn P. Casey and Thomas Wydler of The Bad Seeds.

“A dream of mine is happening,” said Cassandra Wilson, “I’ve been in love with Billie Holiday’s voice since the moment I heard it, and she has inspired me throughout my career.”
Her world tour in conjunction with the new album is going to start in February and she’ll play New York’s Apollo Theater for the first time on April 10th. The new record will be out in the spring (no exact date set yet).
