Gina Carey – The Soul Singer

Gina Carey "The Soul Singer"Chicago-born soul singer Gina Carey has released 11 albums so far, many of them were highly praised in the Gospel charts and market. Her new record “The Soul Singer” includes several midtempo soul swayers like “Eyes Of A Child” which was the first single and showcases her as an artist that deserves much more attention.

Soft guitar tinkerings accompany the equally soulful “Brand New”. If comparisons are allowed, Gina comes very close to the almost legendary Stephanie Mills. Her timbre and some of her vocal traits are similar to those of Frau Mills. The tempo moves up with the sexy “Dance” complete with hot background vocals and guitar/bass/drum work coming right out of the late 70s. “Grateful” with its positive and uplifting message is geared towards the R&B charts and should end up in the top positions.

Gina is not only a soul singer and songwriter, but an actress, engineer, author, producer and director. “I Need To Know” brings out some of her angel-like qualities like the Deniece Williams of the late 70s. “In Love With Love” is a stripped-down, bare Soul masterpiece with Gina preaching that the world needs a little more love. It’s an extremely seductive tune with backing vocals simply emphasizing the word love to maximum effect.

She gets down with the Funk, but moderately and modestly, in “Is That Alright” and seriously funky with “It Better Be Funky”. “Through The Waters” includes some astounding vocal chops which show her easily reaching the higher registers as well. “Side By Side” is finest quality independent soul and the similarities to Stephanie Mills are amazing, but Gina is no copycat, but convinces with her natural, no-holds-barred style. And I do like her first name of course….

Catch her on a cruise starting in Nassau, Bahamas July 3rd with Rose Royce on baord as well, among others.
