Leo Middea in Cologne

Brazilian singer, songwriter, and guitarist Leo Middea played Cologne last night. The tiny little Stereo Wonderland, a local hang-out in a bubbling neighborhood, hosted him for an intimate solo show. And Leo proved once again that he truly belongs to the top contemporary musicians from Brazil. He has released five albums so far (the first one when he was only 19) and prepares the release of his sixth one which will come out in February. Now based in Barcelona, he has toured extensively in the past couple of years and last year, he was the first Brazilian artist to reach the finals of the Festival da Canção in Portugal and went home with second prize.

But anyway, it was a magical night and so refreshing to hear his songs stripped-down, going to the core and the heart of each piece. It was especially rewarding with some of his slower pieces, like the sublime and ethereal “Your Dance And Your Body” which had the whole room sing along. It truly is a gorgeous beauty. And there are so many other heartwarming songs coming out of his soul like “Banho De Mar” which is still resonating big big time ever since it came out on his 2020 EP “Beleza Isolar”. And there were other gems as well, like “Lisbon, Lisbon” which has become sort of an instant classic for him. He also featured a single from the upcoming album: on “Sulamérica”, he praises Brazilian culture, the people and the flavors on an energizing Afro-Brazilian pop song which is a delicious appetizer for his upcoming album (he just released a second single called “Verano”-I can’t remember though if he played that particular song last night).

If you’re anywhere near his forthcoming gigs, please make sure to check him out. Oh and thanks Chris for the Kölsch!
