Leon Bridges On Tour
Leon Bridges, the classic soul singer from Texas who is bridging the gap between 50s and 60s style soul à la Sam Cooke and Gospel, is currently on a European tour supporting his “Coming Home” album which came out in June. Leon performed a showcase concert in Berlin in May and I had the pleasure to talk to him the day after the concert.
Back then, he said that he had started to write songs about four years ago. “Something like modern R&B. A friend asked me if Sam Cooke was my inspiration. I hadn’t heard a song from him before, but of course I knew him. I was then checking out some old videos of Sam and the Temptations and such and realized that this is exactly the kind of music I wanted to make. I think today a lot of things are just exaggerated. I love simplicity.”
You can also find my intro article in the current Jazzthing magazine and on their website.
Here are Leon’s tour dates for Europe. The 26-year old singer embarks on a US tour in early October and will play New York’s Apollo Theater on October 20th and Webster Hall on the 21st.
