Roy HaynesThe legendary drummer is celebrating his 90th birthday next March 13th and New York’s famous Blue Note Club will be the artist’s party location. Haynes, who started his career in 1945, will be at the West Village club from March 13th-15th and each night will feature two shows and a different special guest artist:

Bassist Christian McBride will be on stage on the first night and also scheduled to appear during the festivities are trumpeter Roy Hargrove and tap dancer Savion Glover. The band accompanying Haynes at the Blue Note will consist of Jaleel Shaw (sax), Martin Bejerano (piano), and David Wong (bass).

In his early career, the drummer was a member of Charlie Parker‘s quintet and he was also accompanying Sarah Vaughan in the 50s. He has recorded and toured with just about everyone and there is a great retrospective out on Dreyfus Jazz called “A Life In Time – The Roy Haynes Story” where you can find his major recordings between 1949 and 2006.
