Samara Joy Announces New Album
Singer Samara Joy, who has enjoyed an incredible run of successes, accolades, and awards and who played all major festivals and venues in the past couple of years, just released her version of the standard “You Stepped Out Of A Dream”. The tune, written by Gus Kahn (a German-American lyricist born in Koblenz by the way) and Ignacio Herb Brown, has been recorded by millions of singers before. The first recording was by Glenn Miller & His Orchestra in 1941. Nat King Cole, Chris Connor, Johnny Mathis, Lorez Alexandria, Julie London, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Sergio Mendes, Morgana King, Shirley Horn, Patricia Barber, Andy Bey, Sue Raney, Dena DeRose, and so many more, have covered the song through the decades. Samara’s version is a fascinating retro-styled work and swings like hell. The 24-year old easily plays her way around the tune which also boasts with a short trumpet solo (Jason Charos) and some light scatting over a bossa-fied beat. Her phrasing and range are amazing throughout.
Samara’s new album “Portrait” will be released on October 11th. It features standards, originals and two pieces by Charles Mingus and Barry Harris with new lyrics by the singer.
