“Butterfly” is Top Song of the Year for Gina

We’re back from the holidays and witnessing the devastating news from Los Angeles. We just hope that all our friends and contacts in SoCal, and of course all of the residents of this beautiful city, are safe and taken care of, one way or the other. It is really hard to see so many structures totally decimated. We can’t imagine how it feels like losing your own house. Hang on in there!

“Butterfly” – The Free Label

The Free Label

The six-piece group The Free Label from Toronto surprised us this past October with their second album “Songs For Sienna”. There are a lot of really intoxicating dancefloor, disco, r&b and soul tunes on this nine-tracker, like the brilliant “On The Floor (Let It Slide)”. We adore the smoothness and swagger of “Change Your Mind”. There is one ballad with some seriously deep and affectionate lyrics which simply floored us. There is this “Street Life”-sounding part towards the coda of the song which only adds to the beauty of the composition. It is a group effort, brimming with dramatic strings and lead vocals to die for. And I guess we all went through the story which comes across as truthful as can be. Kudos to lead vocalist Josh Daniel, synth player Jacob Thompson, guitarist Malik Mungo, keyboardist Cole Mendez, bassist Mathew Fantini, and drummer Jason Martin. A vinyl release will come out later this year and the group tours Europe in the fall. We can’t wait!
