Jazz Connect Conference January 5th and 6th
The Family of Jazz is the subtitle and theme of the next Jazz Connect conference, to be held on January 5th and 6th at Saint Peter’s Church in New York City. And a family gathering it is indeed. It is always a blast seeing so many of our peers and being around people who are keeping jazz alive and busy.
This year’s keynote speaker will be Maria Schneider and Christian McBride will receive the Bruce Lundvall Visionary Award. Make sure to check out various McBride combos at the Village Vanguard while you’re in town: he will play with his trio (Christian Sands on piano and Jerome Jennings on drums) from January 10th to 15th and his New Jawn McBride Quartet (Marcus Strickland on tenor sax, Josh Evans on trumpet and Nasheet Waits on drums) from January 17th to 22nd. He will be introduced by impresario George Wein.
As usual, there are a lot of panels and workshops, among them with topics like innovating booking and touring strategies, streaming and downloading issues, social media from the artist’s perspective, a jazz documentaries panel, a producers roundtable, or community engagement for presenting jazz. Also, Israel is this year’s showcase and spotlight partner. The list of attendees looks very promising and I’m looking forward to saying hello again to the jazz family.
