Orange Jazz Days

The Dutch jazz scene has always been a pretty vibrant one, as documented over the past decades at the North Sea Jazz Festival, which begins next week Friday. So it is only reasonable to also have a festival which exclusively dedicates its programme to jazz artists from the Netherlands. The Orange Jazz Days, staged at TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht, will take place October 3rd to 5th. Its first edition will present a plethora of Dutch jazz in various styles, combinations, and exclusive premieres.

Orange Jazz Days

On Friday, October 3rd, the festival will focus on some big bands and large ensembles, like the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw with Misha Mengelberg, or the Nu-Art Orchestra under the direction of Marike van Dijk. We will also get to see the Loek van den Berg Quintet, playing music from their latest album “Seafarer” which came out in January. The saxophonist has a beautiful approach and tone and comes up with some very lyrical compositions. Pianist Martin Fondse will team up with singer Femi Dawkins and strings. I already saw the charismatic group PARRA.DICE last April at jazzahead! in Bremen. Their fresh mix of various genres is pretty entertaining and exciting. Also on stage on October 3rd: saxophonist Tineke Postma and pianist Marc van Roon, bass clarinetist Joris Roelofs with his solo project Red Flag, percussionist Vernon Chatlein and his group i su Zumbi, and bassist Zack Lober and his band NO FILL3R.

Coming up on Saturday, October 4th: saxophonist Yuri Honing and his Acoustic Quartet, Utrecht based hip hop trio .multibeat, trumpeter Eric Vloeimans with a Dutch suite, pianist Jeroen van Vliet with a new septet which he put together especially for this event, the Kika Sprangers North Sea Jazz Quintet, and lots more. And on Sunday, October 5th, alto saxophonist Benjamin Herman will present his newest edition of the European Alto Festival, exclusively playing Dutch compositions. You can get all relevant info on the programme and tickets on the TivoliVredenburg website.
