Berlinale 65
The 65th Berlin Film Festival is in full gear and offers over 400 movies over a period of 11 days. One of the movies which runs in the Panorama documentary section, is a recapture of Nina Simone‘s life called “What Happened, Miss Simone?” The film, directed by Liz Garbus, will have its Berlin premiere tonight.
The documentary actually opened the Sundance Film Festival in Utah earlier this year and highlights Simone’s early years as a classical pianist, her activities in the civil rights movement, and also her problems with mental illness. After the screening at Sundance, the audience there was treated to a mini-concert by John Legend who sang several of Miss Simone’s songs. So who will be on stage for the Berlin showing? I’ll let you know in the next couple of days right here on these pages.
