Four Weeks To Go Until North Sea Jazz
North Sea Jazz 2024 is upon us. The full programme is out since a couple of weeks and as usual, there is a lot to explore at Rotterdam’s Ahoy. Artist in residence this year is Meshell Ndegeocello who will show her different musical sides: on Friday, July 12th, she will honor the founder of the Black arts movement, Larry Neal, with music by NTU Troop (Gary Bartz), Eugene McDaniels, and Public Enemy. On Saturday, July 13th, she plays music from last year’s “The Omnichord Realbook”. And on Sunday, July 14th, she will perform material from her debut album “Plantation Lullabies” from 1993, which includes the unforgettable “If That’s Your Boyfriend (He Wasn’t Last Night)”, a track we could relate to 100% at the time ;-). Meshell’s next album “No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin”, is out on Blue Note on August 2nd by the way.
Who else is playing at North Sea? Too many artists to mention them here so please check the website below. But we look forward to the Metropole Orkest directed by Tijn Wybenga with special guests Lizz Wright and Ambrose Akinmusire, Reuben James who will have new music coming up shortly, Spanish trumpeter Milena Casado who will release her debut album later this year and who performed in Terri Lyne Carrington’s group last year, singer and songwriter Jazmine Sullivan who is on her first European tour, Electro Jazz duo Sungazer who will play their futuristic music with a Dutch big band especially for North Sea Jazz, singer Arooj Aftab from Pakistan who just released her brilliant “Night Reign” LP, Joel Ross with his Good Vibes, Brazillian legend Djavan, Terri Lyne Carrington‘s New Standards featuring singer Christie Dashiell, Terence Blanchard E-Collective with the Atom String Quartet, and so much more.
