New Gina Radar Playlist Now Online
Every week, Gina releases a 60-minute playlist with new music which moved us one way or another. We do get a vast number of links and streams of new albums and singles every single day. These playlists are a way to not let those songs fall under the radar. The latest playlist features 14 tracks: Lalah Hathaway has just released her new album “VANTABLACK”, another mixed affair with some of the songs on offer not really resonating with us. But there are a few tracks written and produced by the great Phil Beaudreau, among them the really fascinating, optimistic, and simply beautiful “No Lie”. I think having Michael McDonald as backing vocalist for this particular track is really a coup.
Brighton-based singer and songwriter Natty Reeves has a brilliant soul/bossa tune out called “Bloom”. It features trumpeter Jackson Mathod and is part of an EP called “Mist Over Water” which will come out on September 25th. The press release rightly states that this is like a combination of Ben Watt and João Gilberto. Australian trio daste. fascinates with their lo-fi meets soul sound on “Around”. We can’t get enough of this too. Brazilian-born, LA-based guitarist Fabiano Do Nascimento just released another hypnotizing song called “Olhos D’água”. One of the most amazing drumers, Clarence Penn, who has worked with just about everybody from Betty Carter to Michael Brecker, from Wynton Marsalis to Dianne Reeves, will release his new album “Behind The Voice” this Friday. It features various singers covering pop songs. Kurt Elling does Peter Gabriel, Aaron Marcellus does a superb job on Stevie Wonder’s “Send One Your Love”, Chelsea Jackson does Prince and there are also pieces by TOKU and Emily Braden. Clarence himself can be heard through his vocoder doing “Human Nature”. Great one – full review follows this week.
Singer and songwriter Conya Doss is back with a swell new midtempo groover. “I Can’t Stand To Lose” was written by Myron Davis and proves why Conya is one of the best r&b/soul singers around. Pat Metheny released a third track off his new album “MoonDial”, due July 26th. A truly remarkable and fascinating cover of the Beatles classic “Here, There & Everywhere”. Pianist Eliane Elias is back in style with a new album on Candid. “Time And Again” has her returning back to form after a few disappointing releases. The album features special guests Mike Mainieri, Bill Fisell, Mark Kibble and Djavan. Stay tuned for a full review. One of our favorite contemporary artists, Tom Misch, just put out another track from his vaults: “Cinnamon Curls” is another one of those typical Tom ballads with his voice totally getting directly to your heart and soul. Citrus Sun, this other band of Incognito’s Bluey, just came out with their fifth album “Anaconga” which is a real winner. Alto saxophonist Markus Howell just released his second album for Posi-Tone called “Chosen Path”. His playing is truly imaginative and exciting and stands out from a lot of similar-styled projects. And there is more to explore here so please check out, listen and like Gina’s latest here:
